History of Aichi Prefectural University
The origin of Aichi Prefectural University can be traced back to Aichi Prefectural College for Women, which was established in 1947. The desire on the part of the people living in Aichi Prefecture to rise from the chaos of the post-World War II era prompted the establishment of a women's technical college consisting of a Department of Japanese Literature and a Department of English Literature. Later, the technical college was reorganized into a women's junior college, and in 1957, Aichi Prefectural Women's University was established as a four-year institution. In 1966, Aichi Prefectural University made a new start as a coeducational university with three faculties and nine departments (Faculty of Literature, Faculty of Foreign Languages, and Faculty of Foreign Languages II). In 1998, the campus was moved from Nagoya City to a new location in the eastern hills of Nagakute City, and facilities and equipment were completely renovated. In 2002, the Graduate School of Information Science was established. Since then, we have been aiming as a public university to contribute to the development of the region by producing talented human resources in Aichi Prefecture and beyond, based on a philosophy of education and research that encompasses, and places a high value on, internationalization, information technology, a welfare society, and lifelong learning.
In 2023, to remember and honor the lives and thoughts of those who have studied and worked at Aichi Prefectural University, the university’s 75th anniversary was commemorated through the digitalization and publication of historical documents, newspaper articles, press releases, and nostalgic old photographs, along with a short film depicting the university’s history through interviews with former students, staff, and faculty members.

History of Aichi Prefectural University of Nursing
The Aichi Prefectural College of Nursing was established in 1968 as Aichi Prefectural Junior College of Nursing, and in 1989, the prefectural assembly adopted a petition from the heads of 27 nursing training institutes in Aichi Prefecture to establish a university. In 1995, the University of Nursing was established as a four-year college. Since its opening, the College of Nursing has trained many nurses under the motto of “nursing education that respects humanity,” “training nurses to protect people’s lives and communities,” and “fostering scientific thinking and scientific problem-solving skills.” In 1999, the Graduate School of Nursing established a Master’s Course in Nursing, and in 2003, a Midwifery Course. In 2008, the Center for Nursing Practice was established as a certified nurse education program (cancer chemotherapy nursing and cancer pain nursing) to respond to the increasing sophistication and specialization of nursing practice.

Philosophy of Aichi Prefectural University
In April 2007, Aichi Prefectural University and Aichi Prefectural University of Nursing changed their organizational structure to be newly established universities operated by the Aichi Prefectural Public University Corporation. In April 2009, the two universities were merged, and the undergraduate and graduate schools of the former Aichi Prefectural University were reorganized to form a new university consisting of five faculties and four graduate schools. Having inherited the good traditions of the two parent universities, Aichi Prefectural University is firmly committed to continuing to deliver education and conduct research based on the following principles, while taking advantage of the merits of a university complex which has both liberal arts and science faculties:
- In the 21st century, as part of a "knowledge-based society", we aim to be a "center of knowledge" in which researchers who boldly challenge the pursuit of knowledge and students who are passionate about acquiring knowledge mutually enlighten and learn from each other.
- In this "era of decentralization," as a public university responding to the growing demand for higher education, we promote quality research and quality education backed by this research, and we use research results to contribute to local and international communities.
- We promote research, education, and regional cooperation that contributes to the realization of a "mature symbiotic society" which includes the symbiosis of nature and humans, of science, technology, and people, and of various people and cultures in human society.
